A whisky advent calendar is one of the few whisky gifts that suits almost anyone who likes a dram. Behind each door is a small sample, usually 30ml (about one measure), so a calendar is really a guided tasting of 24 or 25 whiskies spread across December. It is a cheap way to try bottles you would never buy blind, and it lasts the whole month instead of one evening.
The trouble is choosing. Most calendars look alike from the outside, and the differences that matter are the style of whisky inside, the price per dram, and whether the person you are buying for will enjoy all of it.
How we chose: we have not tasted the 2026 editions, so nothing here is a tasting verdict. We compared the calendars on what each contains (style and number of drams), price per dram, and who each one suits. The two retailers below publish the full line-up on each product page, and note that individual drams can occasionally be swapped for ones of equal value.

Best for a smoke lover: The Peated Whisky Advent Calendar (2026)
A general calendar will put a few smoky drams among many unpeated ones. Someone who loves Islay whisky will want the reverse, and this calendar is 25 peated whiskies for £134.95. Avoid it for anyone who dislikes smoke: there is nowhere to hide.
If they are new to smoky whisky, our guide to lightly peated whisky is a gentler first step, and peated vs unpeated whisky explains what the peat levels on a label mean.

Best for someone who has tried a lot of Scotch: the two world whisky calendars
For someone who already knows their Speyside from their Islay, a calendar that spreads its drams across whisky-making countries is the more interesting month: whiskies they are less likely to have tried. There are two to choose from.
The Perfect Measure's Whiskies of the World calendar at The Whisky Exchange has 25 drams for £120, with free UK standard delivery, which makes it the cheaper of the two. Master of Malt's World Whisky Advent Calendar has 25 wax-sealed 30ml samples for £134.95. Compare the two line-ups on the product pages and pick the one with fewer names they already know.

For the collector or a big occasion: Single Cask and Favourites
Two calendars cost considerably more. The Single Cask Whisky Advent Calendar (£199.95, about £8 a dram) is 25 single cask whiskies, each from one cask, so every dram is a one-off. At the time of writing it is on pre-order. The Master of Malt Favourites Advent Calendar (£249.95, about £10 a dram) is 25 wax-sealed 30ml samples chosen by the retailer from its best-regarded producers.
Both make sense for a milestone birthday or a serious collector. For most people, the £99.95 calendar plus a good bottle of their favourite whisky is a better use of the same money.

How to choose a whisky advent calendar
- Match the style to the drinker. The biggest risk is a month of drams they do not enjoy. If they dislike smoke, avoid the peated calendar, and see our guide to non-peated whisky brands for what to look for instead. If you do not know their taste at all, the single malt calendar is the safest choice.
- Compare the price per dram, not the box. Divide the price by the number of doors. Here that runs from about £4 to £10 a dram.
- Check the line-up. Each retailer lists every whisky on the product page. A quick look tells you whether it is mostly names they already drink.
- Buy early. The popular calendars sell out before December, and you want it to arrive before 1 December. Ordering by mid-November is the safe plan.
- Check delivery to your country. Both retailers here are UK-based. Spirits delivery rules vary by country, so check before ordering if you are outside the UK.

FAQ
Are whisky advent calendars worth it?
For trying a lot of whiskies, yes. At around £4 to £5.50 a dram for the main calendars, you taste 24 or 25 whiskies for less than the cost of a few full bottles, and you find out which ones are worth buying. They are poor value only if the drinker dislikes the style inside, which is why matching the calendar to their taste matters.
How much whisky is in a whisky advent calendar?
Most use 30ml (3cl) samples, about one measure each. A 25-door calendar of 30ml drams holds 750ml in total, slightly more than a standard 70cl bottle. Check the listing for the exact size.
When should I buy a whisky advent calendar?
As early as you can. The best-known calendars often sell out in November. Order by mid-November so it arrives in time for 1 December.
What is the best whisky advent calendar for a beginner?
The Whisky Advent Calendar (2026) at £99.95. It is single malt Scotch, the cheapest per dram here, and a good way for a beginner to find out which styles they like.
Can I get a whisky advent calendar without smoky whisky?
Avoid the peated calendar, and check the line-up on the others, because general calendars usually include a few smoky drams. If they dislike smoke strongly, a full bottle from our list of non-peated whisky brands may be the safer gift.
