ComboJoy Torch Kit: a cheaper way to find out whether smoked cocktails are for you.
Most whiskey smoker kits look almost identical online: a wooden lid, a torch and a few tins of wood chips. Yet prices run from about $30 to over $150. This guide tells you which one to buy and what the extra money actually gets you.
To choose our recommendations, we compared each smoker's design, included equipment, price, ease of use and documented owner feedback. Where we discuss real-world performance, we distinguish manufacturer specifications from the experiences reported by people who own and use the products.
The short answer
| Product | Best for | Butane included? | Main drawback | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aged & Charred Smoke Lid Kit | Most people, and gifts | Yes | Costs a lot more than generic lids | $130 |
| Aged & Charred Electric Kit | No flame | Not needed | Power button can be fiddly | $100 |
| Aged & Charred Barrel Kit | Hosting | Yes | Big and expensive | $180 |
| ComboJoy Torch Kit | Trying it cheaply | No | Fewer woods, no fuel | Varies |
| Budget electric smoker (Amazon) | Cheap flameless option | Not needed | No syrup or garnishes, fewer woods | Varies |
Here's the important bit. If you want a smoker you'll still be using in six months, buy the Aged & Charred Smoke Lid Kit. It also makes the best gift here. If you'd rather not keep butane in the house, buy their Electric Kit.
Prices are in US dollars. Aged & Charred ships from the US, so UK readers should check delivery at checkout; the ComboJoy on Amazon is the simpler buy there.

Torch or electric?
Decide this before you compare brands. Both burn real wood and both flavour the drink. The difference is the routine.
- Torch: you get the ritual and direct control over how much you burn. You also need butane, and most kits don't include it.
- Electric: press a button, no flame, no fuel. Quicker, and better around children.
The best whiskey smoker kits
Best overall and best gift: Aged & Charred Smoke Lid Kit
$129.99 · Torch and oak lid · Butane included · 8 woods · Wooden storage box
This is the one we'd recommend to most people, and to beginners, because there's nothing else to buy. The 13-piece kit includes the oak Smoke Lid, a four-burner torch, butane, eight woods (oak, cherry, apple, hickory, pear, peach, mesquite and pecan), a recipe book and a bottle of Old Fashioned syrup, all in a solid wooden storage box.
The tapered lid sits on smaller glasses and fits inside larger ones, so it works with rocks, coupe and Glencairn glasses. Owner feedback points to consistent, reliable results, which is what you want from something you'll use every week.
Why pay four times the price of a $30 lid? You're not getting a different way of smoking a drink. You're getting a better torch, the fuel, eight woods rather than three or four, and a box that keeps it all together on the home bar. If you'd end up buying butane and extra woods for a cheap kit anyway, the gap narrows. The box is also what makes it the best gift here: it looks considered, and because the butane is included, they can use it that evening.

Best electric: Aged & Charred Electric Kit
$99.99 · Battery powered · No butane · 8 woods
Load the chips, press the button, and it smokes. Aged & Charred quotes around 100 drinks per charge. The kit also includes Old Fashioned syrup, cherries and dried orange slices, so it covers the whole drink: this is an Old Fashioned smoker kit in the literal sense.
Buyers like how quick and easy it is, and several mention the build quality and flavour. Owners also use it well beyond whiskey, on beer, coffee and even hot chocolate. The one recurring complaint is the power button: a couple of verified buyers say it can stick, though both say the smoker works well otherwise.

Electric Cocktail Smoker Kit Review
I recently purchased the Electric Cocktail Smoker Kit from Aged & Charred, and it has completely elevated my at‑home drink experience. The kit is easy to use, heats up quickly, and produces a rich, clean smoke that adds incredible depth to cocktails. I love that it is electric—no fussing with torches or inconsistent flames.
The build quality feels solid, and the included wood chips offer a great variety. I have already used it for old-fashioned drinks and smoked margaritas. Every time, the flavor comes out smooth and impressive.
Overall, it is a fun, high‑quality tool that makes entertaining feel a little more special. Definitely worth the purchase, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys craft cocktails at home.

Great smoker kit at a great price!!
On a past holiday my husband had a cocktail where the whiskey was smoked and absolutely loved it… I came across the ComboJoy Whiskey Smoker Kit on Amazon so bought it for him for a surprise. This kit is brilliant and really does do the job and it is packed really well… The two glasses are lovely with a good weight, we didn't expect them to be such good quality to be honest! The only additional item required, apart from the whiskey, is a tin of butane gas… He is very happy with his 'new toy' and we've shown it to other people who are going to buy one. It's a brilliant gift for anyone who loves whiskey… Definitely recommend this item...it's brilliant!!

How to use an Old Fashioned smoker kit
- Make the drink. 60ml bourbon or rye, a little syrup and two or three dashes of Angostura bitters, stirred with ice and strained into the glass. Hold back the large ice cube until after smoking. See our 5 whisky cocktails guide for the full method.
- Add a small pinch of chips to the smoker. Keep them loose, not packed.
- Put the smoker on the glass and light the chips, or press the button.
- Leave it for 30 to 60 seconds, then lift, add the ice cube and taste. Start at the short end and add more smoke next time if you want it. Too long and the drink turns acrid.
For a fuller walkthrough from our own sessions, including timings for neat whisky and the mistakes to avoid, see how to use a whiskey smoker.
Start with oak
Oak suits bourbon and rye because the whiskey has already spent years in it. Then try cherry or pecan for something sweeter. Use hickory and mesquite sparingly; they overpower easily.
Which whisky should you smoke?
Choose something with enough body and sweetness to stand up to the smoke. A rounded bourbon like 1792 Small Batch, a spicy rye like WhistlePig 10 or Jack Daniel's Bonded all work well. Keep delicate or expensive single malts for drinking neat.

Mistakes to avoid
- No butane. Unless the kit says it's included, it isn't.
- Torch won't light. A freshly filled torch often needs the gas dial at the base turned towards +.
- Too many chips or too long. A small pinch and about 30 seconds is plenty to start.
- Burning near anything flammable. Use a stable surface, keep the flame away from curtains and paper, and let hot parts cool.
If I were spending my own money, which would I buy?
The Aged & Charred Smoke Lid Kit. It isn't the cheapest, but it's the one most likely to be used every week: the simplest format, a good torch, and fuel and eight woods in the box, so nothing stands between you and a drink.
Without a torch in the house, I'd buy their Electric Kit, which is also $30 cheaper, and live with a slightly fiddly button. And if I just wanted to find out whether smoked cocktails were for me, I'd start with the ComboJoy.

Frequently asked questions
Do you need butane for a whiskey smoker kit?
For most torch kits, yes, because torches ship empty. Aged & Charred's torch kits include a can, and electric smokers don't need any.
Do electric smokers work as well as a torch?
For flavour, yes, since both burn real wood. An electric smoker is quicker and needs no fuel; a torch gives you more direct control.
What's the difference between an Old Fashioned smoker kit and a whiskey smoker kit?
Mostly the name. Both smoke the drink the same way. Kits sold as Old Fashioned smoker kits sometimes add the other ingredients, such as syrup, cherries and dried orange, as the Aged & Charred kits do. Any whiskey smoker will make a smoked Old Fashioned.
Is a whiskey smoker a good gift?
One of the best whisky-related gifts, because it's something to do rather than just something to own. Pick a kit with butane included. See our whisky gifts for men for more ideas.
Can you smoke food with it?
Yes. Cheese, cured meats, nuts and dried fruit all work well.
